Phosphogypsum is not used for sustainable applications.

Phosphogypsum generated by the Sterlite Copper is used in fertilizer, bricks and cement manufacturing, which are sustainable applications. The details of the quantity of phosphogypsum generated and disposed and the customer details are submitted to the TNPCB every month.

Phosphogypsum leachate is percolating and contaminated the ground water.

Phosphogypsum is stored in the lined pond and has a dedicated leachate management system. Piezometric borewells are located surrounding the phosphogypsum storage yard. The samples are collected by TNPCB every month to analyse the quality of ground water. The ground water quality in these piezometric borewells is comparable with the baseline ground water quality.
