Brief About Sterlite Copper :

Sterlite Copper, a leading copper producer in India is the first custom built Copper Smelter commissioned in 1997 at Thoothukudi, Southern India. The company has part of refinery and two copper rod plants located at Silvassa in Western India. Currently, the smelter is rated as the 8th largest copper smelter in the world in terms of capacity holding a domestic market share of 36%.

Employment :

It has around 3500-4000 employees working for it, including the contractors. The plant employs around 70% of local population from Tamilnadu out of which 70% are from Tuticorin. A number of ancillary industries, like Stevedorers, Freight forwarders, Transporters, etc., are also dependent on this plant and indirectly gives employment to more than 20,000 persons through ancillary and support industries.

Revenue & Tax Contribution :

Through its various transactions, the plant generates revenue to Central and State Governments in terms of GST, Custom duties, Income tax and VAT to the tune of Rs. 2000 Crores. It is the single largest private sector company contributing to major part of Tuticorin port volumes. Further, the presence of a major industry in the industrially backward areas of southern Tamil Nadu has greatly augmented the overall development of the area in the last 2 decades.
